We’re able to offer this course free of charge because we’re running it in partnership with the Centre for Community Journalism at Cardiff University (@C4CJ)

A HALF-day course looking at the latest developments in the laws that affect community journalists, web publishers & bloggers

Topics to be covered include:

  • Latest cases in privacy and the implications for journalists: Impact of the General Data Protection Regulation, due to come into force in 2018.
  • Latest developments in libel, including recent cases and the effect of libel reforms of the Defamation act 2016
  • Contempt of Court – guidance on recent prosecutions – what is it safe to publish now?
  • Changes to reporting rules relating to children in and out of courts
  • Changes to copyright law
  • Reporting restrictions in the courts and relating to sexual offences
  • Law and social media as it applies to journalists
  • Update on the new IPSO code of practice for online and print journalists
  • Potential impact of departure from the EU on legal protections for publishers and broadcasters

The session will take the form of a presentation, with a short workshop and there will be plenty of opportunities for discussion of individual issues/concerns.

Slides and supporting notes will be made available to those attending on the day.

David Banks

David Banks is a journalist with 24 years’ experience and delivers NUJ Training Wales’ course on Media Law and Ethics. He is a media consultant delivering training to a range of national and regional media, NGOs, government, charities, PR companies, universities and the police. He is a trainer who has created and managed successful courses in journalism, media law and production journalism. He was co-author of 18th, 19th and 20th editions of McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists. He writes regularly on law and the media for The Guardian, The Mirror and The Independent. He is a frequent contributor BBC TV and radio news programmes.
