Mobile Video Shoot & Edit with Dan Mason
What’s it about?
In an action-packed day of training, you’ll learn how to shoot and edit interviews, explainers and simple video stories using your mobile, ready to be shared online or on social media.
Hundreds of journalists as well as those working in charity, union, university, corporate or government comms have gained valuable new skills with this popular NUJ Training Wales course. The training continues to evolve, helping comms professionals to create short-form video content in horizontal, square or vertical formats with confidence.
Using a free app for editing, the training is ideal for those with an iPhone or Android devices.
A PDF Toolkit, with tips and links to relevant apps and kit, will be shared on the day and feedback and extra advice is offered after the workshop by our trainer Dan Mason.
Who’s it for?
Journalists and content creators from any industry or sector. No prior experience of video shooting and editing is necessary. Those who took the course pre-Covid are also welcome to update and refresh their mobile video skills.
What will I learn?
- Record and edit face-to-face and selfie-style interviews, understanding shot framing, background, audio and lighting, ready for upload to social media
- Learn how to edit and export video in horizontal, square and vertical formats.
- Add titles and subtitles to your videos.
- Source and add appropriate music to video projects.
- Combine video and/or images with titles to create video explainers.
- Understand the basics of story structure, including shooting in sequences.
- Add effects to spice up social media video.
How will it be delivered?
Face-to-face.
What equipment will I need?
Bring a fully-charged iPhone, iPad or recent Android smartphone, capable of running current apps. iPads are welcome, but you’ll find shooting easier on a phone.
Earbuds or headphones, plus charger.
A free video editing app (to be advised), installed from the Apple App Store / Google Play Store BEFORE the workshop.
Tripods, mobile mounts and microphones will be provided during the training, but participants are welcome to bring their own accessories.
You will need space on your device to record video (as a rough guide, if half the device’s storage is available, you should be fine).
