If you’re freelance and would like an injection of exciting new ideas or you are considering a freelance career then this event is not to be missed.

FREELANCE SALON is an NUJ workshop that will explore diversifying to make journalism pay. Freelance speakers will share their experience of operating in a media industry that offers a wealth of new opportunities.

At this event, 4 freelances with diverse and exciting portfolios will share how they have developed a variety of income streams. This is followed by Q&A and an opportunity to network with fellow freelancers over tea/coffee and lunch.

9.30am:  Arrival, breakfast pastries, tea/coffee

10.00am:  Natasha Hirst, photo-journalist

For photographers seeking to provide services that are more responsive to client needs and for print journalists/Communications specialists looking to use photography to provide impact.

  • How to use photography for social media, campaigns and PR
  • Combining other skills with photography to diversify income
  • Seeking new sources of income including project funding

10.40am: Richard Gurner, founder/editor of the Caerphilly Observer

  • How this hyperlocal went from an audience of zero to tens of thousands in just a few years
  • What grants from public bodies and support from charitable organisations are out there?
  • How being associated with the venture has opened up new doors

11.20am:  Mid-morning break/teas & coffees

11.40am:  Rachel England, freelance journalist, editor and copywriter

  • The importance of diversifying and finding new income streams
  • The rate for the job
  • Maintaining relationships with editors/commissioners to keep the work coming

12.20pm:  Laura Emily Dunn, director of LED Media and founder of Political Style

  • how blogging kickstarted my business journey
  • how diversification of skills led to a freelance career
  • how writing for international publications launched my consultancy business
  • how political work is leading to new projects

 

 1pm – 2.30pm:  Networking lunch

We have a cancellation policy of two weeks for this workshop because of the costs associated with running it. If you cancel within this period we will be unable to refund any course fees.

If you are a member of the NUJ and have been made redundant in the last six months, or are facing redundancy you are entitled to two days of training free of charge. Please contact us for more details.
