How to shoot and edit video on your mobile (*Now with new app)

Trainer – Dan Mason

What’s it about?

If you are creating content for social media, there’s no getting away from it: Video is a must-have skill. But creating video is hard, right?

Wrong. Video styles, techniques and tastes have changed. The most effective video for social media is short, simple, vertical and authentic.

With a little know-how and confidence, content creators from any background can get their message across with video. That’s what this day of hands-on training, using your own mobile and a new app, is all about. You can do it!

You’ll learn the key skills needed to shoot, edit and share attention-grabbing short-form video, accompanied by examples from successful video creators. The focus is on Reels, Stories and TikTok-style vertical video, adding text, titles, music and effects. Expect an active, rewarding and fun day of learning.

Who’s it for?

Those involved with managing social media for their organisation, or beginning the mobile video journey. No previous video experience required.

In addition, this updated course would suit those who have attended an NUJ mobile video course in the past and wish to refresh their skills.

*Beyond CapCut … here’s Vita.

If you have attended an NUJ Training Wales mobile video course in recent years, you will know about CapCut. It has been our go-to video editing app since it launched and has become a leader in creating mobile video.

But if you use CapCut regularly with a free account, you will know it has changed over the past months. CapCut is increasingly driving free users towards a Pro subscription by limiting access to useful tools. At the same time, the app is awash with Pro effects and templates that can make it confusing for free users. It is still a great app, but not as ‘free’ as it was.

Our trainer Dan Mason has tested the options, and in this course we will use the Vita app – very similar to CapCut but without the clutter. We’ll also cover apps to add subtitles and perform other mobile video tasks.

What will I learn?

  • Learn three easy-to-master styles for mobile video.
  • Record and edit selfie-style interviews, understanding shot framing, background, audio and lighting, ready for upload to social media.
  • Create explainers using voiceovers (both your own and AI-generated), video clips and images.
  • Add titles, subtitles, music and transitions to your video.
  • Learn how to convert and export video in horizontal, square and vertical formats.

What equipment will I need?

A fully-charged iPhone or Android smartphone.

Earbuds or headphones, plus charger.

The Vita video editing app, installed BEFORE the workshop.

For Android mobiles: tinyurl.com/dm-vitadroid. For iPhones: https://tinyurl.com/dm-vitaois

Tripods, mobile mounts and microphones will be available, but participants are welcome to bring their own accessories.

Participants are advised to update system software and apps before the workshop. You will need space on your device to record video.

Timing
