Survive and Thrive as a Freelancer – Webinar

Tutor David Thomas

This webinar will give you an insight into freelance working – from those new to the industry or looking to go freelance to those who have been trading for many years – and help you build resilience and efficiency into your work. It will also address rapid changes and challenges in freelance work, and look at how challenges, including the Coronavirus outbreak – might be turned into opportunities.

There will be information for those who are sole traders, those who run their own business, and those who earn some of their income through PAYE.

Who is the workshop aimed at?

The participants will be experienced freelancers, new to freelancing in the creative industries, particularly journalism, or looking to become freelance.

No freelance experience will be necessary but the workshop will be a useful refresher for more experienced freelancers (including journalists who offer PR/Comms as part of their freelance portfolio).

The webinar will:

· Help delegates gain an insight into the practicalities of a freelance lifestyle

· Provide tips and tools for better financial planning and effective networking

· Encourage students and working professionals to share their experiences and concerns

This session will look at:

· Finance skills for freelancers – how to budget; splitting professional life from personal life

· Different types of freelance payments – PAYE, Sole Trader, Limited Company

· Tax and NI for freelancers

· Keeping records without wasting time – and the implications of HMRC’s new digital taxation

· How to pitch and agree work

· How to chase payments

· How to plan your networking digitally during isolation

What you will learn:

Delegates will come away with a clearer idea of how to organise themselves and plan to think like a business. They will understand the importance of good record keeping, and tax and NI implications.
